my ex-boyfriend and i started dating after he confessed his feelings for me at a diner on w 69th & broadway. we drank a few bottles of red, and somewhere between glasses, his feelings found their way to the surface. for so long before that, i had wanted to tell him how i felt, but i was too embarrassed, too scared to actually say it.

and then, suddenly, there he was across from me, looking at me like i was someone he could love.

one night, long after the diner, but when i knew we were coming to an end, he fell asleep beside me in a blue striped shirt. i remember lying beside him, listening to him breathe, realizing i was already trying to memorize him. he was still next to me, still mine in every visible way, but we were done & i remember thinking something so simple, yet kinda heartbreaking: i hope i at least remember this shirt he's wearing.
